I’m currently watching D.L. Hugley’s new show on CNN and he just finished his monologue and as a black person, I didn’t find it funny and I didn’t get it. The entire audience struggles for laughter and it was obvious that someone must have been holding a “applause” sign.

What a waste of talent. The show is more insulting to black people than funny to black people. I wonder what CNN was thinking. I’ve spent the better part of this year watching CNN for its smart, fair and no hold bar news reporting and the anchors of the shows. But now if they keep this show on the air, I may  have to reconsider my choice.

It’s 30 minutes into the show and I haven’t laugh once. Hughley invited top analysts from CNN to attempt to be funny but of course it was a disaster. Hughley even had a pimp pretending to be named Freddie Mac and that was even a bigger disaster.

It is now 10:33PM Eastern time and I turned the TV off. I couldn’t watch anymore insult toward black people in such a sensitive year. This show I’m sure is funny to white people. It’s just another way for them to laugh at us thanks to CNN and D.L. Hughley.

Hughley…you just sold us out. I hope you can rest at night with the money they pay you.

I’m inviting as many people as possible to write into CNN to cancel this show and express their feelings about it. click below.

I agree completely. This is a truly awful program. I’m white and no, I didn’t find it funny either. The racial stereotyping turned my stomach in the first few minutes and I turned it off. I was appalled by his treatment of Obama. You bet I wrote CNN!

There’s something inherently wrong about writing a review and judging a program without watching it in its entirety.

Yes, DL was nervous and rushed in his opening monologue, but settled down to a nice pace. To each his own, but I thought it his program was unique and funny, and I applaud Hughley and CNN for trying to do what they did: tackle racism and laugh at it. If you watch it again, I think you’ll see that DL was more radical – and funny – than your first impression led you to believe.

BTW, I’m black, and proud that he broke a new barrier without being a suck up.

Many of you use the term Minstrel Show which kind tells me you are not of the generation DL and I are. When I grew up I did not think Redd Fox or Moms Mabely was funny but a lot of older people do, Minstrel show to me were like Sandford and Son, Good Times and the Jeffersons (very embarrassing shows). Younger people need to get into politics as well, it is hard to do that when you see these stuffy suited old men that look like a hated school teacher with little sense of humor. Besides DLis the only one with the onions to take on Rush!!

This is one of America’s most important elections ever and with all the sensitive race issues at play here this show was in very poor taste and very ill-timed. I have also written to CNN asking for the show to be removed from the air.

    Kit,

You have a point, so wanted to let you know that I gave it another chance when it reran later in the evening. I still think it’s awful. A CNN show that enforces stereotypes so constantly is not what the country really needs at this time. Maybe there’s another network, or late night time slot on which it would work better. Stereotyping allows us to think too simply, with an “us vs. them ” mentality. It’s just not the right format for CNN to promote.

    Kit (Keep It Trill) Reply:

I respectfully disagree to your statements of this “is not what the country really needs at this time”, and “Stereotyping allows us to think too simply, with an “us vs. them ” mentality.”

Oh, in my half century of living, how often have I heard the line, now is not the time”?

    Got fear? Let it go.

The time has never been better to sweep the dirt from under the rug. We can’f fight stereotypes because they exist in reality. Racist whites will hate us even every single one of us act just like Barack & Michelle Obama. This needs to dealt with head on and DL Hughley did this.

The new revolution is on. It’s time for all to deal with it and stop trying to assimilate and santitize our culture and entertainment, and telling jokes which pretend racism doesn’t exist. Does it anger whites and scare blacks terrified those whites won’t vote for Barack? Yes, some. But one show or ten ain’t going to run away a white Obama voter. If Fox News hasn’t succeeded by now, that person will pull the lever for That One. The only thing we have to worry about on Nov 4th is our votes being stolen, because Obama has already won this. You just watch.

This show just looks God awful to white people trying to get to know and understand blacks. Why didn’t they keep Roland Martin on? Are they trying to destroy Senator Obama, are the Republicans behind this? This is such a divisive and unfunny show with all of the bad stereotypes and flat sense of humor!

I wrote CNN a scathing letter, how dare they put him on with this nonsense 9 days before election day! There are independents still undecided and this is just the thing to make them rethink an Obama presidency! I hate him and CNN right now!

DL portrayed us as Porkchop/chicken eating, GED having, undereducated pimps and I was ashamed and I feel this put us back a couple of steps when we were starting to move forward. There is a time and place for everything and CNN was not the place and this is definately not the right time for a negative stereotype. Truely, I feel that DL kind of sold us out on this one. I am more confused than ever. I am a McCain supporter who watched the show and found it to be totally not funny and also highly (black) racist (DL used the word black 27 times in the first 15 mintues) Yes, anyone can be racist. Also, I am not sure why O’Bama supporters are so upset. DL pitched Obama during the whole show and never mentioned John McCain as even being a candidate. If this election is about race, during these troubling international terrorist and shaky economic times, then America is in trouble. Can’t we all try to do what Colin Powel asked, “we have to move beyond race” Folks once and for all Let’s get over this nonsense. People are people, never mind the color of their skin. There are more working poor whites and hispanics than blacks. I am supporting McCain because of his experience OBama just is not ready. It has nothing to do with the fact he is bi-racial. Voting “present” 130 times does not show me someone who is ready to lead the country. And if CNN thinks having a not funny black racist try to change my mind is going to be effective, then CNN doesn’t get it at all.

The original post was exactly what I was thinking. A jaw dropping T.V. watching experience. Thanks for your comment. I also had to turn off the TV. A disgrace, really sad that he bought into mocking black folks during this time in political history. A white person could never say those things but they knew if they paid a brotha, he would gladly oblige. Yes he is a comedian and I suppose Dave Chapelle (whom I love) has comedy in the same vein talking about black people BUT the tones of D.L.’s comedy were negative, divisive and encouraging others to make similar harmful jokes.

Tell me when should he do it then. I am black too, and I would rather he be the jokester than one from a different race. There is hidden racism thrown out other shows each night, what is said about that? How does Shawn Hannity from Hannity and Colmes on FOX keep getting away with the things he say like belittling Obama as a community organizer, he hangs out with terrorist, Bill Ayers, America doesn’t know who he is every night of the week. He clearly seems prejudice to me as well as the network. And not to mention D.L. Hughley did get an endorsement for Obama during the show. Comedy will not hurt Obama from getting elected.

CNN did this intentionally. How many times have CNN invited D L Hugley to do a show for them. They needed the most ignorant person to portray their own race in the most negative false light, so they can enjoy someone being racist, but since it is a black person, we can broadcast to world this ignorance and degrading portrayal of blacks.

It is past Uncle Tom. It is the clown or the Jester who brings humor to the king wearing a dunce hat and clothes. Some people will do anything for money including insulting and putting down his own race. People need to think before they act.

This was just as bad as black person being in the McCain rally when they said “kill him” and carrying monkey’s with Obama headbands. Then there was another ignorant black person begging McCain to attack Obama. They are always able to find at least one, and in this case “they” is CNN and the black person in this case is “D L Hugley”,

Just when I thought we were about to turn the page on race issues in a positive direction, CNN turns into FOX. I have enjoyed the programming of CNN for many years, however this weekend I had to question the judgment of anyone involved in the DL Hugley show. This show was not just without humor it was without substance. With the many talented News personalities in the media market today CNN has missed an opportunity to bring what could have been considered a Meet the Black Press show filled with examples and ideas to help improve many differences in America with the equivalent of the Flavor of Love. In affect you just pulled a John McCain by selecting a Sarah Palin. PS; if this does not work out well for your ratings, I heard Flavor Flav has not renewed his contract for the next season of Flavor of Love, maybe you could let him stand in for Wolfe during election night coverage.

This show aroused anger, resentment and indignation. It is a personal affront to the senses of all African Americans who have worked diligently to dissolve these antiquated sterotypes. It is thoroughly disagreeable on many levels. This “display” only served to cause hostility and I feel personally offended to have had the misfortune to “witness” it. It only serves to treat Senator Obama (and the American people at large) without the proper respect or attentiveness we richly deserve. If CNN was attempting to jump on the SNL bandwagon, the mark was sorely missed. My only conclusion is that for someone who makes “over $250,000 per year”, D.L.’s Hughley’s “greed” overshadowed his common sense as an African American. D.L., look deeply and ask yourself if you are truly a better person than the Wall Street Execs. From my viewpoint, you are not… I liken this circus to the movie “Bamboozled”. Have you seen it? If not, take a glimpse in the mirror – close enough!!!

Well the answer was with a banana or something shiny, and once he grabs for it he is trapped. Then he asks. once he realize he is trapped, why doesn’t he let go? because of his greed. Well Hugley, even in the prescense of oppression, his greed, is taking over. There is always going to be Dathans out there. As long as they have their bling bling, they don’t care about the treasures they have, they will take the bling bling for a short time. Although he realize he is being trapped he doesn’t care. even when he is put back into slavery, he will slave, and sweat for that that cannot feed, or shelter him, just a symbol that he has some importance, and he is good to go.

I had hoped that DLH would have been similar to Bill Maher or the Daily Show– shows with intelligent educated hosts who use comedy in an intellectual way to emphasize political issues. Instead, CNN opted to hire this anti-intellectual to represent the worse form of American cultural. I am deeply hurt and offended. I suggest we use this blog to begin our boycott of advertisers for the show–Let’s begin with one advertiser initially and move to the others until we get DLH off the air.. At palin rally, hughley demonstrated the all white folks who are not yet ready to accept a black candidate. One can say I am being divisive but those are hard facts. You gotta make a problem known before tackling it and CNN has done the right thing.

And there was a question if you guys did not notice. “how many more christians should we elect before voting for the right guy?”. Hughley may have only a GED but i bet no one of you intellectuals can ever come up with something like that.

I mean, it is not really a good idea to put a show which makes use of stereotypes(but dosent encourage them) on a primarily older caucasian network, but its not that bad. I’d think that CNN is trying to reach out to the younger audience kinda like what Larry King’s been doing (bringing famouse celebritites to the show).

CNN is keenly aware that DLH is an ignorant uneducated buffoon. My friends and I noticed for some time how CNN constantly plays the race card and frequently puts on shows about race. In almost every instance, these shows highlight the most negative aspects of the African American community. We have switched to MSNBC. Also, we no longer support the sponsors of DLH’s show. I suggest that everyone on this blog do the same and encourage at least 10 other people to do the same.. I guarantee our collective action will make a profound difference. Remember in this economic downturn no sponsor can afford to lose just one sponsor. We can do it , Yes we can.

Thanks to D.L. Hugley’s past and present show’s people “should” see
here’s a “Man” who opened doors for other’s in the world of entertainment and could have easily said to himself “I got mine now you gotta get your’s”.
I’ll pray for those who fail to see that CNN has provided D.L. the opportunity to provide political updates from a “different” perspective other than from a well educated reporter such as CNN’s Don Lemon.
Change the channel !!!…but to ostrasize a man who has the courage to take on a challenge in front of the whole world and still suceed in bringing light humor in his reporting “at such a serious time” especially by those who are African Americans is shameful. Graduate Strayer Univeristy, N.Y.U., and United States Marine Corp Solider (Honorably Served) and Network Security Analyst (Fortune 100) Company (18 yrs). Guess you’ll find something wrong with me and my comment. Stay Strong D.L. Peace.

Like many others, I didn’t get the point of this show either. When it first aired I thought it was actually a parody! Black people discussing politics and trying to be funny with it at the same time. D.L. Hughley isn’t the most intelligent anchor on CNN and I’m don’t “get” the jokes sometimes, and the only reason I know he intended to be funny is because he smiles for awhile and then pauses for applause. But with all that, he has been trying to up his game and I give him credit for trying to hang in there. BUT….

Am I the only one that was scratching her head wondering what was Michaela Angela Davis babbling on about when she was a guest on the show???? This is a very strange woman!!!!! I think she got confused and forgot she was on CNN and not BET, talking about the Obama girls are his princesses and not someone’s B’s and H’s. WHAT?!?! We are talking about a 7 and 10 year old Ms. Davis and NO 7 and 10 year olds are considered or called B’s or H’s! Then she went on to some random thoughts about Michelle Obama giving the girls a look, Michelle not being arm candy, though she IS a beautiful woman in my opinion and how Barack is hot. WTF??!?! Did anyone else feel like they were watching someone who was trippin on acid speak? I think Ms. Davis tries way too hard to come up with something deep but it looks like she memorized some lines from Hip Hop vs America and regurgiated them on D.L’s show! Someone save this “sister” and keep her off the tv!!!!!!!
