LIC. FELIPE CALDERON HINOJOSARecently, Barack Obama stated that his administration will strengthen the bond between the two neighbouring countries – the United States of America and Mexico. He believes that the relationship between Mexico and U.S.A. can be stronger than how it is today.

Just a few days before Barack Obama seats at the White House, he met with President Felipe Calderon from Mexico. This is a tradition practiced by the American presidents before their inauguration or a few days after the event.

After the lunch meeting held at Mexican Cultural Institute, the two leaders gave general details about the topics that discussed for more than an hour.

Barack Obama said that they talked about the NAFTA or the North American Free Trade Agreement which includes the three countries namely United States, Canada, and Mexico. Aside from that, they also discussed the immigration and border security at the same time. Obama also mentioned that he and Calderon generally talked about Western Hemisphere as well.

The President-elect of United States said that he wants to create different ties between the said countries such as cultural, security, and of course, commercial ties. He admitted that he admires Calderon especially in taking care of the economy of Mexico and his efforts against illegal drugs.

Last year, United States gave Calderon an anti-drug aid package which is worth more than a million dollar for deploying troops that captured the top kingpins of illegal drugs. Barack Obama said that he supports the Merida Initiative and would also support the cause of Calderon which is to end the gun-smuggling from United States to Mexico.

Barak Obama also said that he told the president of Mexico that he will work on the relationship strengthening plans starting on his first day at the White House. The private lunch meeting was generally discussing about the different ways on how the two countries can build a stronger and better relationship.
