Overcrowded Classrooms in Nigeria
October 24, 2008 by JMarcel
Recently, the teachers from Nigeria joined the other teachers all over the world in celebrating the World Teachers Day for the year 2008. But during the said celebration, the attention was given to the poor school conditions of both teachers and students in Nigeria. Everything was actually in contrast with the educational standards set by the UNESCO.
Comrade James Oladimeji, the branch chairman of NUT, and the other teachers in Nigeria were present at the said event.
The NUT or the Nigerian Union of Teachers would like to make sure that the World Teachers Day would help them address the uncountable problems that are currently being faced by the education sector. Moreover, they are also hoping to have proper solutions to these dilemmas that would last for a long time.
Chairman Comrade James Oladimeji, currently working at the Amuwo-Odofin branch, gave focus to some of the problems that most teachers in the country are experiencing right now.
One of the things that he mentioned is that the schools in Nigeria have inadequate as well as poor infrastructures. This also includes the lack of the facilities that are needed by the teachers, shortage in the qualified personnel working for the school, incompetent salary, inadequate allowances for the professionals, and the lack of the support services to the teachers as well.
He also said that there should be more efforts in improving the expansion of the classrooms and maintaining it as well. Chairman Comrade James Oladimeji also noted that according to the UNESCO standard, there should only be at least 25 students for every teacher. This is in contrary to the current situation in Nigerian schools today where there is an explosive number of students per classroom.
He asked the government to take a stand and do something about the condition of the education in Nigeria in order to attain the country’s desired educational aspirations and goals. But aside from that, the chieftain also mentioned that it is the society who must play the big influence and must embrace a very positive attitude so that there will be a great change in the education sector of Nigeria.
