Obama’s Grandmother dies one day before his victory
November 4, 2008 by F. Gerald
Yes, I said it. She died before his victory celebration.
Madelyn Payne Dunham died today, she was 86 years old. It is obvious that she molded Obama into the man that he is today. Obama made the announcement on his campaign train in North Carolina. Obama and his sister Maya Soetoro-Ng said Dunham died peacefully late Sunday night after a battle with cancer.
Obama visited his Grandmother last month after learning that she was gravely sick. Obama said that the decision to put his campaign on hold to see his Grandmother was an easy one to make. He told CBS that he “got there too late” when his mother died of ovarian cancer in 1995 at 53, and wanted to make sure “that I don’t make the same mistake twice.”
“When I hear a woman talk about the difficulties of starting her own business, I think about my grandmother, who worked her way up from the secretarial pool to middle-management, despite years of being passed over for promotions because she was a woman,” he told his party’s national convention in Denver, Colorado, in August.
“She’s the one who taught me about hard work. She’s the one who put off buying a new car or a new dress for herself so that I could have a better life. She poured everything she had into me.
“And although she can no longer travel, I know that she’s watching tonight, and that tonight is her night as well.”
You can say anything you want about his mixed background, but it’s obvious that both his mother and Grandmother played a big part in his life. I saw his speech tonight and he wiped away tears as he addressed the crowd. Obama remained strong and sensitive at the same time. He definitely defined what a real man should be and what a President needs to be.
