The humanitarian wing of the United Nations has just announced recently that there were over 35,000 people who were forcefully driven out of their own homes after the fight that happened in Mogadishu last September. As a result, there were already more than one million people in Somalia who were considered as IDPs or internally displaced persons.

According to the OCHA or Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, the exodus or the mass departure from the capital of Somalia started last September 2008. This was probably because of the fights within the area which resulted to loss of the lives of the civilians. The exchanging of blows and violent actions were between different anti-government groups and the three forces namely the TFG or Transitional Federal Government, AMISOM or African Union Mission to Somalia (supported by UN), and Ethiopia.

But aside from the loss of lives because of the conflicts between the said groups, the WHO or UN World Health Organization was also troubled with any case resulting to death of the Somalians as well. According to WHO, there are already more than one thousand cases of diarrhea, specifically in the shelters, causing death to dozens of lives in the country. Thankfully, the World Health Organization and its partners have already started delivering the essential supplies for these poor locals particularly the medicines that they need.

The IDPs have only limited access to the sanitation facilities. Worse is that most of the regions here in Somalia is currently facing shortages in water. The OCHA said that as of the moment, the water that they can use is being delivered by trucks especially in drought-stricken areas in Somalia such as the central region of the country. This is where rainfall is erratic.

The violence in Somalia continues to hinder most of the humanitarian operations in the country. The UN flights going to Mogadishu were already suspended. But despite the fact that most humanitarian operations were blocked other aiding agencies including the WFP, has already fed as much as 2 million people in Somalia.

Recently, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon condemned the recent killing in Somalia. Several aid workers were killed along with the other two UN agency staff members because of the violence in the country.
